No Bride, No Groom, No Problem: LGBTQIA+ Wedding Ceremonies That Actually Fit
Most wedding content out there is written for one very specific kind of couple. If that's not you, you're left doing the mental gymnastics of translating advice that half-applies and ignoring the bits that don't. So let's skip that bit.
A Ceremony With No Script to Follow
The great thing about a celebrant-led ceremony is that there’s no set script to follow, no legal wording to stick to, and absolutely zero assumptions baked in about who you are or what your ceremony "should" look like. That means the usual defaults, the ones nobody questions because "that's just what you do", can be revised, rewritten, or ditched completely.
What This Can Actually Look Like
Ditch "giving away" entirely, or make it yours. You can walk in together, walk in separately with whoever you choose, or skip the whole entrance tradition altogether. Nobody is "given" to anybody unless you want that.
Drop the gendered language if it doesn't fit. No "bride and groom," no assumptions about who does what, the ceremony uses your actual names and your actual relationship, not a template built for somebody else.
Write vows around your real relationship, not a script written decades ago for straight couples. What you promise each other should sound like the two of you, not like a Hallmark card that happens to have your names typed in.
Make room for chosen family. Readings, blessings, a role in the ceremony – you choose the people that matter most to you, because I understand that family and relationships can be incredibly complex.
Decide how much of your journey belongs in the ceremony, and it absolutely is your call. Some couples want to share the whole thing. Some want a few lines and nothing more. Some don’t want it mentioned at all. Whatever you choose, I’m cool with it.
Do it your way
The point is that you don't need to explain your ceremony to anyone. You don't need to justify anything, and you don't need to fit a mould that wasn’t built for you. Your celebration just needs to be true to you.
I've been building fully bespoke LGBTQIA+ inclusive ceremonies from scratch for years, and it fills my heart with joy to help honour the lives and loves of beautiful people who might not always have felt seen and celebrated.
