Can You Have a Celebrant Wedding in the UK?
Yes! Absolutely you can. And more and more couples are choosing to do exactly that.
A celebrant-led wedding ceremony is where an independent celebrant, not a registrar or a religious official, creates and delivers your ceremony. You have total creative freedom over the content, location, style, tone, and structure. It's your day, your story, your rules, full stop.
The only thing to be aware of is that celebrant ceremonies aren't currently legally binding in England and Wales (Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules — worth looking into if that's where you're based). The law around this is slowly changing, but for now, if you want to be legally married, you'll need to do a quick civil ceremony at a registry office in addition to your celebrant ceremony.
That might sound like a hassle, but honestly? Most couples find it's barely a blip. A 20-minute appointment with a couple of witnesses, a small fee, and it's done. Then your celebrant ceremony can be whatever you want - outdoors, on a boat, in your nan's garden, wherever.
Having two ceremonies also gives you a lovely excuse to have two celebrations. Just saying!
If you're worried about the legal side, I'm always happy to talk through how it works and help you figure out the logistics. It's way simpler than it sounds.
