Micro Weddings: Why Small Guest Lists Can Make for the Best Ceremonies

The micro wedding trend isn't going anywhere. And honestly, having been part of some truly spectacular small ceremonies, I completely understand why.

A micro wedding is generally considered to be a wedding with fewer than 30 guests, sometimes as few as 10. The idea is to strip back the guest list to only the people who genuinely matter, invest more in the experience for those people, and create a day that feels intimate, meaningful, and completely pressure-free.

Here's why they work so well: when you have 80+ guests, the ceremony often becomes a performance. You're aware of every person watching, you can feel the mass expectations of the room, and the whole thing can start to feel more like a show than a moment. With 15 people who know and love you, something different happens. The room feels warm. The emotion is real. Everyone is fully present.

Micro weddings are also brilliant for creativity. A smaller guest list means a smaller budget per head goes a lot further. Couples who go small often end up with a more beautiful, more personal, more memorable day than they would have had with a 100-person wedding.

And from a ceremony perspective? A small, intimate gathering is where a celebrant-led ceremony absolutely shines. I can write something that references almost everyone in the room. We can have the kind of personal, emotional, funny ceremony that would feel a bit exposed in front of a crowd of 120 but feels perfect with 20.
